Wolverhampton Photographic Society Wolverhampton Young Photographer 2020 Competition Rules 1) Wolverhampton Young Photographer (“WYP”) is an annual photographic competition (“Competition”) organised by Wolverhampton Photographic Society (“WPS”). It is the responsibility of each entrant, together with an eligible adult if under 18, to ensure they have read and abided by the Competition Rules and the submission guidelines found in the ‘How to Enter’ section which form part of the Competition Rules. 2) Eligibility for Entry The competition is open to young people who live, study or work within the WV postcode area. By entering the competition that entrant’s school or college peer group will also be permitted to enter even if they do not live, work or study in the WV postcode area. Within the definition of these Rules the term ‘peer group’ refers to others who work or study alongside the entrant and not all others who may be part of the organisation. Images that have won an award in previous WYP Competitions cannot be re-entered and those persons involved with the organisation of the Competition, and their families are not eligible to enter. 3) Images deemed to be Illustrations and/or artwork are not allowed, including images that contain components considered as graphic design if those components have a prominent role within an image. 4) All entries must be submitted digitally and uploaded via: www.wolverhamptonyp.org.uk Entries submitted by email or mail will not be accepted under any circumstance. No digital files will be returned but all images, except those short-listed, will be deleted at the end of each Competition. 5) The Competition closes at MIDNIGHT (Greenwich Mean Time) on Sunday 20th December 2020. No entries or image uploads can be accepted after this time and this deadline may only be extended at the discretion of the organisers. It is the entrant’s responsibility to ensure there is enough time to complete an entry. 6) There are two sections in the competition. JUNIOR SECTION This section contains three categories and is for photographers who are at school up to and including Year 11. • Creative • Patterns • Landscape & Nature SENIOR SECTION This section contains three categories and is for photographers who are in Year 12 or Year 13 or the equivalent year at college. The maximum age for this section is 18. • Creative • Patterns • My Lockdown In each section, three images per entrant may be submitted for each of the three categories giving a maximum of 9 images in total. Entrants cannot submit the same image twice, including a modified version of it, or into more than one category and there is no requirement to enter all categories or submit the maximum 9 images. As an example for the Senior section, one might enter 1 in Creative, 3 in Patterns and 2 in My Lockdown. In both sections and all categories, you cannot enter Illustrations and/or artwork nor work based on the ideas and themes from TV/theatre nor images involving any kind of weapon or portraying violence. 7) There are two major awards: Wolverhampton Young Photographer 2020 – Junior Wolverhampton Young Photographer 2020 – Senior The winners of these will be the person whose image chosen by the judges is the best from the images awarded first place in any category of the given section. 8) Judging All entries will be assessed by a primary selection panel and a short-list will be announced following the completion of the primary selection and judging processes. All those on the shortlist will be contacted by email and to be invited to attend the Final Judging and Awards. In the event of a tie at any stage, the decision of the judge(s) shall be final. A list of the winners together with their winning photographs will be published on the WYP website shortly after the awards have been presented. 9) Prizes Wolverhampton Young Photographer 2020 – Junior Section There will be a prize for the image judged the best in each of the categories and will comprise £50 cash and a certificate. The entrant who creates the entry deemed by the judging panel to be the single best image chosen from each of the three Junior Section winners, will become Wolverhampton Young Photographer 2020 – Junior and will additionally win a practical photographic workshop and a trophy to keep. Wolverhampton Young Photographer 2020 – Senior Section There will be a prize for the image judged the best in each of the categories and will comprise £50 cash and a certificate. The entrant who creates the entry deemed by the judging panel to be the single best image chosen from each of the three Senior Section category winners, will become Wolverhampton Young Photographer 2020 – Senior and will additionally win a practical photographic workshop and a trophy to keep. School/College Trophy If the overall winner attends a school or college, a trophy displaying the institution name is awarded to their school or college to keep for one year and to then be returned to be awarded to the next winner. If the overall winner does not attend a school or college, the organisation from which there are the highest number of finalists will receive the trophy. 10) General a) WPS reserves the right to change prizes to those of comparable value if required by unforeseen circumstances. Any such changes will be posted on the WYP website. Prizes are not transferable and no cash equivalent will be available for non-cash prizes. b) If any winner is unable to be contacted after reasonable attempts have been made, WPS reserve the right to offer the prize to a runner-up. c) Additional prizes that may be supplied by sponsors and supporters are the responsibility of their supporting companies and WPS is not liable for any difficulties or issues that may arise in relation to these specific Awards. d) WPS reserve the right to modify, cancel or terminate the Competition given unforeseen circumstances beyond its control. These may include, but are not restricted to, computer viruses, technical equipment failure or the denial of third party services that may affect the integrity and fairness of the Competition. 11) Copyright and permissions By submitting images to the Competition, each entrant confirms and warrants that they: a) are the sole author of each entry and that it is their original work. In the case of composite images all components within the image must be the work of the entrant; b) own the copyright and any other intellectual property rights of each image; c) have the prior permission of those pictured in the image (or, where the image shows any persons under 18, the consent of their parent/guardian) for the usage rights required by WPS and any competition sponsors as detailed in #12; d) have not licensed or disposed of any rights in the image that would conflict with uses to be made by the Competition (see #12); and e) where appropriate, have received any necessary permissions from the owner(s) of buildings included in submitted images for the usage rights required by the Competition as detailed in #12. 12) Reproduction By entering the Competition, the entrant grants WPS and WYP competition Sponsors a non-exclusive, irrevocable licence to reproduce, enlarge, publish or exhibit, on any media, the images for any purpose connected with the Competition. This may include, but is not limited to: a) use in Competition literature – print & digital versions; b) display at any exhibitions; c) use on a secure web browser for judging purposes; d) inclusion on the WPS and WYP web sites and on the web sites of WYP competition Sponsors; e) use in press, promotional and marketing materials in both printed & digital format as appropriate; f) inclusion on social media used by WPS and/or WYP competition Sponsors. The Copyright of each image is retained by its respective photographer. 13) WPS will remove any entries from the competition it feels may breach or contravene laws of public decency or may bring the photographer, the Competition, WPS or any of its sponsors into disrepute. Such entries will be deemed as void. 14) The decision of WPS on all matters relating to the competition is final and no correspondence will be entered into. Should the entries in any category fall below the standard required by WPS and/or the judges, WPS reserves the right not to award prizes. 15) All images must be uploaded via the WYP website following the on-screen instructions and no other method of entry will be accepted in any circumstance or for any reason. By accepting the Competition Rules and subsequently submitting images, entrants have entered into an agreement with WPS. Images cannot be withdrawn or amended after the close of the competition. 16) Liability a) WPS and the competition Sponsors cannot accept liability for any loss, damage, injury or disappointment incurred as a result of participation in, or other involvement with, the Competition, to the fullest extent allowed by law. b) Proof of electronic submission is not held as proof of receipt by WPS. c) WPS and the competition Sponsors cannot be held liable for any emails sent by WPS that do not arrive due to the entrant’s email security settings or any other reason. d) WPS and competition Sponsors cannot be held responsible for damage to any computers or other technical equipment relating to, or resulting from participation in the Competition or from the download of materials connected to the Competition. 17) The information given in these Competition Rules is correct, but WPS reserves the right to change any of the above without prior notice. Any such changes will be posted on the competition website. By entering the Competition, entrants will be deemed to have agreed to be bound by these Rules. Any breach of these Rules by an entrant will void their entry. If a breach has occurred, but is discovered after the award of a prize, WPS may request the return of that prize. 18) This Competition will be governed by English law. v2020.2 Wolverhampton Young Photographer 2020 Entry Guidelines Image files should use the sRGB colour space and be 8 bits per channel which is the standard output from digital cameras and smart- phones etc. The preferred minimum dimension is 3000 pixels along the longest length and do not include identifiable information, advertising, watermarks, borders or signatures on your entry. If you need to resize your pictures, make sure not to overwrite the original file. Images must be uploaded the right way round and no responsibility can be taken by WPS for images that are submitted backwards or incorrectly orientated. Submitted images will be accepted ‘as is’. Black & white/monochrome images are eligible for all categories, as are images in panoramic format. Image Title A photograph must be given a title, for example ‘Blue Eyes’. Image EXIF Data (Optional) If present, image EXIF metadata inserted by the camera at the time of capture should be left unaltered and not removed. There is no requirement for a title or name to be added and if this information is present the WYP submission system will add/replace these with the title and name entered on the web site submission form. File sizes Images from digital cameras or camera phones can be submitted and must have been taken using a camera with a sufficiently high resolution to allow the image to be reproduced to a maximum size of A4. It is recommended you use a camera of 6 mega-pixels or more. The final file size must be less than 2.5Mb. NB: Please ensure the camera used is on its highest-quality setting. Digital adjustments Digital manipulation is allowed, as is dodging & burning, changes to tone & contrast and cropping, high dynamic range (HDR) imaging techniques and stitched panoramas etc. In the case of composite images all components within the image must be your own work. WPS may request the RAW file(s) or original camera jpeg(s) for any short-listed image in order to confirm this is the case. Copies Please ensure that copies are kept of submitted images. WPS will take all reasonable steps to ensure the safe storage and back-up of entries within the term of the Competition, but cannot be held responsible for exceptional circumstances including Acts of God. Submitting an Entry Entrants should submit their image(s) via the Competition web site: www.wolverhamptonyp.org.uk Entrants should complete the information requested during the submission process and must include a valid email address for any future communications relating to the Competition.
